A Moncton Legend (Maybe…)

No one knows exactly where Le Mudster came from, or how he came to be.

Some say he was simply a blob of mud that decided one day to stand up and walk. Others believe he's the last of his kind—a curious mud creature that somehow survived against all odds as the river changed around him. A few insist he's nothing more than a happy accident of nature. No one really knows… and Le Mudster isn't telling.

Chapter 01

Born of the Chocolate River

One thing is certain: Le Mudster has always belonged to the Moncton Mud Flats.

For years, he lived quietly beneath the muddy riverbed of the Petitcodiac River—the famous Chocolate River—hidden from the world. It wasn't an easy place to call home. When the river was blocked by the causeway, the tides weakened, sediment accumulated, fish struggled to migrate, and pollution from urban and agricultural runoff lingered in the river. Life became quieter than it was meant to be.

Chapter 02

The River Breathes Again

But rivers have a remarkable way of healing when given the chance.

When the causeway gates were finally reopened and the tides began to return, the river slowly started to breathe again. One day, as the famous tidal bore rolled upstream, a muddy figure was spotted riding the crest of the wave as if he'd been surfing it his entire life. Most people dismissed it as driftwood… until the driftwood waved.

That was believed to be the very first sighting of Le Mudster.

Chapter 03

Swept Into the City

Swept along by the returning tides, he eventually found himself exploring Moncton, where he quickly became fascinated by parks, cafés, festivals, bicycles, patios, artists, musicians, and the wonderfully peculiar humans who call the city home.

Chapter 04

The Flower

Then, during the Spring of 2026, something unexpected happened.

A flower sprouted from the top of his head.

No one can explain how a flower manages to grow from a creature made entirely of mud. Le Mudster certainly can't. But one thing has become clear: the flower seems deeply connected to his heart. When he's joyful, it blooms brightly. When he's discouraged, it droops. Fortunately, Le Mudster has discovered that kindness, curiosity, laughter, and spending time in nature are usually enough to make it blossom again.

Chapter 05

Sightings

Since then, sightings of Le Mudster have become increasingly common around Moncton. Some people claim they've seen him sketching in cafés, wandering the Riverfront Trail, cheering on ducks, admiring wildflowers growing through cracks in the sidewalk, helping clean up forgotten bits of litter, or simply sitting quietly watching the river.

"And so the legend continues. Keep your eyes on the river."
